Let’s discuss from the Quranic point of view:
And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange.
Surah: AL-KAHF Ayat: 50
He was a great worshiper of Allah, so he was raised up to the level that he was allowed to worship along with the angels.
Angels are created from light, jinns from smokeless fire and human from clay/mud.
And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.
Surah: AR-RAHMAN Ayat: 15
He[Iblees] said, “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
Surah: SAD Ayat: 76 & Surah: AL-A’RAF Ayat: 12
These indicate that Iblees was one of the jinn (not angel).
And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.
They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
Surah: AN-NAHL Ayat: 49-50
